Story and Implementation
While preparing for CCNA studies, I decided to get access to some Cisco routers, and switches to have hands-on experience working with real equipment. It is much more full picture to be able to take something from a Packet Tracer Lab or Boson's BOSS OS base Labs, and apply it to genuine Cisco Appliances on genuine Cisco IOS.
It was very informative to learn how to cut and test cables, to create VLANs and connect clients via cable. Getting clients access to the internet, and partitioning networks properly. Configure OSPF, static routes and learning about EIGRP, and BGP. Spanning tree is limited with only 2 switches and I'm aware that EVE-ng and GNS-3 could be use as alternatives. But between thing and Packet Tracer it's been a great experience.
I have plans to eventually upgrade some of these more dated pieces with something maybe faster, and more energy efficient, ideally a little smaller. It would nice to add a WLC and an AP or two to experiment with some of the features offered on the wireless side of Cisco, however I have a good amount to learn and work with already.
